So the combat in Nioh 2 feels familiar, yet offers enough new mechanics for your to master again. Other mechanics like the Ki pulse, different stances and Onmyo and Ninja skills are all still present.

These unblockable attacks feel unfair at first, but once you know how to use the burst counter, the playing fields turns in your favor. This is a counter move against unblockable attacks made by enemies and it comes in three variations depending on which type of guardian spirit you have equipped. Your guardian spirit will also give you access to a new powerful ability called Burst Counter.
Attuning these souls will give you access to cool new attacks based on the yōkai you attuned. Adding to this, is the new feature of Soul Cores you can pick up from killed yōkai. Aside from your own demon form, you can still take possession of different Guardian Spirits, offering you various new bonuses.
You could say it is a more balanced alternative to the Living Weapon mechanic from the first game, which is absent here. First of all, you can shift into your powerful yōkai form which massively increases your damage output, while damage you take is subtracted from your shapeshifting time, making you somewhat invulnerable.
